Course Abstract:
This guide is written for mental health clinicians who need to be familiar with established screening procedures and brief intervention techniques for alcohol problems within the context of couples or family therapy. The course was produced by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a component of the National Institutes of Health, for the use of health and mental health professionals. It has been placed into the public domain and is available for use by all health professionals. This course helps clinicians learn to identify the defining characteristics of alcohol problems, utilize universal screening procedures, select and apply appropriate interventions, and identify resources for making referrals to specialty treatment alternatives when needed.
