Nutrition Education for Diabetes Mellitus – New CE Course

By Barbara Sperrazza, MS, RD, LD/N, CDE & Lindsay Raub, MS, RD, LD/N

Nutrition Education for Diabetes MellitusNutrition Education for Diabetes Mellitus is a 2-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that describes the rationale and goals for providing medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for the treatment and prevention of diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how the body uses blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is vital to health because it’s an important source of energy for the cells that make up the muscles and tissues. It’s also the brain’s main source of fuel. Chronic diabetes conditions include type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Potentially reversible diabetes conditions include prediabetes — when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes — and gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy but may resolve after the baby is delivered. This course describes the rationale and goals for providing medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for the treatment and prevention of diabetes mellitus. Included are: recommendations for specific nutrient modifications; nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation; exercise and stress; gastropathy; enteral nutrition; testing and classifications; medications and insulin; blood glucose meters; and methods of meal planning. Nutrition education tools and handouts are provided to assist the dietitian in counseling clients. Course #21-08 | 2015 | 26 pages | 14 posttest questions

This course was developed by the Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for their Manual of Medical Nutrition Therapy to provide Licensed and Registered Dietitian/Nutritionists (RDNs) and technicians with evidence-based, non-biased information on nutrition education for diabetes mellitus.

This online course provides instant access to the course materials (PDF) and CE test. Successful completion of both the online CE test (80% required to pass, 3 chances to take) and course evaluation are required to earn a certificate of completion. You can print the test (download test from My Courses tab of your account) and mark your answers on it while reading the course document. Then submit online when ready to receive credit. Communication with Elders

By: Laura More, MSW, LCSW & Edie Deane-Watson, MS, CCC, CCM

With the increasing number of older people in the United States, it is vital for healthcare professionals to communicate effectively and respectfully with elders. Effective, appropriate communication with elders is important for many reasons. For psychotherapists and other healthcare professionals, communication is the foundation of service delivery. Communication is required for assessment of the person prior to treatment. Symptoms are, after all, subjective and must be reported by the person to the clinician. Effective communication also contributes to health literacy; the person’s understanding of her condition, treatment options, and the treatment plan to be followed. A person cannot comply with a treatment program unless the program is communicated clearly enough for the person to understand it. The more effective the communication, the more effective treatment will be – and the more cost effective. Communication also helps the clinician understand the whole person: the emotional, social, and financial realities that affect response to treatment and ability to comply.

Communication with EldersCommunication with Elders is a 2-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides an overview of aging changes that affect communication, dysfunctional communication habits to avoid, and strategies for appropriate communication with elders. 2015 | 26 pages | 15 posttest questions

The Registered Dietitian in Long-Term Care

By: Laura More, MSW, LCSW and Edie Deane-Watson, MS, CCC, CCM

The Registered Dietitian in Long-Term Care is a new 2-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides an overview of skilled nursing facilities as a work setting for registered dietitians. Course #20-90 | 2014 | 27 pages | 14 posttest questions

The Registered Dietitian in Long-Term CareAs the population of the United States ages, a growing number of registered dietitians are specializing in elder care and work full or part-time in skilled nursing facilities. Success in long-term care requires the registered dietitian to be familiar with the treatment issues of elders. Knowledge of common medical issues is needed to thoroughly understand the elder’s condition, especially in the long-term care environment where most residents have multiple medical conditions that impact their functioning. This course will provide a framework for providing care in a skilled nursing facility. It is intended to give the clinician an overview of the important aspects of long-term care that effect treatment, including the structure, organization and reimbursement system of skilled nursing facilities. The average resident and common treatment areas will also be discussed.

This online course provides instant access to the course materials (PDF download) and CE test. Successful completion of the online CE test (80% required to pass, 3 chances to take) and course evaluation are required to earn a certificate of completion. You can print the test (download test from My Courses tab of your account after purchasing) and mark your answers on while reading the course document.
