Florida-licensed Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Audiologists have an upcoming license renewal deadline of December 31, 2015.

Continuing Education (CE) Required:

30 hours of continuing education are required every 2 years to renew (50 hours if dual-licensed), of which:

2 hours on the prevention of medical errors are required each renewal.

1 hour on HIV/AIDS is required for the first renewal only.

Preventing Medical Errors in Behavioral Health is a 2-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that satisfies the medical errors requirement of Florida mental health professionals.

Preventing Medical Errors in Behavioral HealthWhen the Florida administrative code first mandated that licensees’ biennial continuing education requirement was to include two hours of training on the prevention of medical errors, there was a considerable amount of grumbling on the part of many licensees in the mental health field. The general sense of it was that – since we do not practice medicine – what is the relevance to our practice? The level of discontent was further amplified by the content requirement proposed by several of the Florida boards, which required specific topics to be included, topics that seemed to be more relevant to medical practice than psychotherapy practice.

Eventually, the courses offered by some accredited providers began to be more closely tailored to the needs of professionals who attend their clients’ psychological and emotional needs rather than to their medical needs. Preventing Medical Errors in Behavioral Health was written to include all of the elements that are required for an approved medical errors course while including topics and case examples that will resonate with both novice and seasoned mental health professionals. While it remains a required course for Florida licensees and satisfies their biennial requirement, it is also intended to be of clinical interest to psychotherapists in other states who wish to increase their awareness of the ways in which clients can be harmed and the many strategies for avoiding such undesirable outcomes. Its emphasis is on areas within mental health practice that carry the potential for “medical” errors. Examples include improper diagnosis; breaches of privacy and confidentiality; mandatory reporting requirements; managing dangerous clients; boundary violations and sexual misconduct; the informed consent process; and clinical and cultural competency. Preventing Medical Errors in Behavioral HealthMedical errors continue to be a major issue in today’s health care arena. Yet it’s been over a decade since the eye opening report from the National Academies’ Institute of Medicine Report To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System (1999): revealed these statistics:

  • Approximately 50-100,000 Americans die each year from medical errors
  • Preventable medical errors cause an additional one million injuries to Americans
  • Medical errors cause more deaths than breast cancer, AIDS or even car accidents
  • 7,000 people die from medication errors alone
  • Repeat tests, disability, and death due to error cost the US $17-38 billion each year

Less dramatically publicized – but often equally damaging to clients – are those mistakes that can occur in the practice of behavioral health. Such errors generally fall into the categories of:

  • Improper diagnosis
  • Breach of confidentiality
  • Failure to maintain accurate clinical records
  • Failure to comply with mandatory abuse reporting laws
  • Inadequate assessment of potential for violence
  • Failure to detect medical conditions presenting as psychiatric disorders (or vice-versa)

Such errors of omission or commission can result in lasting damage to clients just like those that occur in the medical arena. Diagnostic errors lead directly to one of two outcomes: either applying improper – and therefore ineffective and unneeded – treatment, and/or the failure to apply effective treatment. Breaches of privacy and confidentiality can precipitate a cascade of adverse events for clients, often reaching far into not only their personal lives, but even into relationship and occupational spheres.

Mental health professionals are required by several levels of ethical and legal standards to maintain accurate clinical records in order to assure continuity in the course of a client’s treatment. The failure to do so can cause harm resulting from the loss of a clear and coherent course of therapy. Failure to comply with mandatory abuse reporting laws and inadequate assessment of potential for violence lead to obvious dangers to clients and others. Finally, confusing medical conditions with psychiatric ones can lead to damaging – even tragic –consequences for clients due to the failure to offer or refer for appropriate treatment.

Preventing Medical Errors in Behavioral Health, a 2-hour online continuing education course, is intended to increase clinicians’ awareness of the types of errors that can occur within mental health practice, how such errors damage clients, and numerous ways they can be prevented. Its emphasis is on areas within mental health practice that carry the potential for “medical” errors. Examples include improper diagnosis, breach of confidentiality, failure to maintain accurate clinical records, failure to comply with mandatory abuse reporting laws, inadequate assessment of potential for violence, and the failure to detect medical conditions presenting as psychiatric disorders (or vice-versa). Florida Social Work, MFT & Mental Health Counselor License Renewal Info

Florida-CEUsALL CSW/MFT/MHC licensees and registered intern licenses will expire on March 31, 2013. You may renew your license online beginning January 2013.

30 hours of approved continuing education (CE) are required to renew, including:

  • Two (2) hour course relating to prevention of medical errors
  • Three (3) hour course in ethics and boundary issues
  • Two (2) hours of CE on domestic violence must be completed every third biennial licensure renewal period. These two (2) hours shall be part of the 30 hours otherwise required for each biennial licensure renewal, and may be taken at anytime during the six years preceding the renewal for the biennial in which the credit is due.

Florida OT/OTA License Renewal Requirements

Florida-licensed Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) have an upcoming license renewal deadline of February 28, 2013 (due odd-numbered years).

Every licensee must complete 26 hours of approved continuing education (CE):

  • Two (2) hours of a course provided by a Board of Occupational Therapy approved provider relating to the Prevention of Medical Errors.
  • Two (2) hours of a course provided by a Board of Occupational Therapy approved provider relating to the laws and rules for occupational therapy.
  • Twelve (12) hours of home study per biennium are allowed. Home study education is independent study and requires a certificate of completion. Home study education does not include a web-based, satellite transmitted or online instruction program that allows or requires the licensee to interact or communicate back and forth with the instructor during the presentation of the program.

 

Florida OT earning CE online

Professional Development Resources is an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) approved provider of continuing education (#3159). The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by AOTA. For Initial Licensure Renewal

Licensees initially licensed within the second half of the licensure biennium are exempt from the completing the total 26 hours of CE requirements for renewal with the exception of:

If you were licensed on or after 03/01/12, you are exempt from completing the total 26 hours required or the biennium ending 02/28/13. Even though you completed a 2 hour course in prevention of medical errors for initial licensure purposes, you must complete an additional 2 hours of prevention of medical errors for each renewal. You must also complete 1 hour of HIV/AIDS, only if you have not previously completed one. The 1 hour of HIV/AIDS CE requirement is a one-time requirement.

The licensee shall retain the certificates of attendance or other records for 4 years for documentation purposes, in case of audit.

Renewal Information for Florida Psychologists

Florida psychologists have a biennial license renewal deadline of May 31st (of even-numbered years). Every licensee must complete 40 hours of approved continuing psychological education (CE) within the two year licensure period (biennium) including 2 hours on the prevention of medical errors, 3 hours on ethics and Florida laws, and 2 hours on domestic violence (every third renewal).

Continuing Psychological Education Credit

As a condition of biennial licensure renewal, each licensee must complete forty (40) hours of continuing psychological education.

  • Three (3) of the forty (40) hours must be on professional ethics and Florida Statutes and rules affecting the practice of psychology. Of those three hours, at least one hour shall be on professional ethics, and at least one hour shall be on Florida laws and rules relevant to the practice of psychology and shall include Chapters 456 and 490, F.S. and Rule Chapter 64B19, F.A.C.
  • Two (2) of the forty (40) hours must relate to prevention of medical errors. In addition to the study of root-cause analysis, error reduction and prevention, and patient safety, the course content shall also be designed to discuss potential errors within a psychological setting, such as inadequate assessment of suicide risk, failure to comply with mandatory abuse reporting laws, and failure to detect medical conditions presenting as a psychological disorder. If the course is offered by a facility licensed pursuant to Chapter 395, F.S., for its employees, the Board will approve up to one (1) hour of the two (2) hour course to be specifically related to error reduction and prevention methods used in that facility.
  • Every six years, each licensee shall complete two (2) hours of continuing psychological education on domestic violence as defined in Section 741.28, F.S.; these two (2) hours shall be part of the forty (40) hours otherwise required for each biennial licensure renewal. The licensee shall maintain documentation to substantiate timely completion of these two (2) hours and make said documentation available upon request every third biennial licensure renewal period.
  • Passage of the laws and rules examination of the Board constitutes forty (40) hours of continuing education credit, including credit for professional ethics and Florida Statutes and rules affecting the practice of psychology. Passage of the laws and rules examination, however, does not satisfy the requirement for the two (2) credit hours of continuing education on domestic violence required every third biennial licensure renewal period, nor the requirement for two (2) hours relating to prevention of medical errors.

Continuing psychological education credit will be granted for:

  • Completion of graduate level courses approved for credit by sponsors approved by the American Psychological Association;
  • Completion of graduate level courses in psychology provided by a university or professional school which is regionally accredited, except that no more than ten (10) hours of continuing psychological education credit may be obtained for each semester hour;
  • Completion of a colloquium, a presentation, a workshop or a symposium offered for continuing education credit by a doctoral psychology program or an internship or residency which is part of a psychology program that is accredited by the American Psychological Association;
  • Full attendance at workshops/seminars offered by providers approved by the American Psychological Association or any of its affiliates, or providers approved by the Board. A list of Board approved providers is available from the Board office upon request;
  • Simple attendance at a state, regional or national psychology convention or conference. Only four (4) credits will be allowed each biennium regardless of how many state, regional or national conventions or conferences are attended during that biennium;
  • Attainment of diplomate status in a specialty area from the American Board of Professional Psychology, for which thirty-seven (37) continuing psychological education credits, not including the two-hour continuing education course on domestic violence required by Section 456.031(1), F.S., and the two-hour continuing education course on the prevention of medical errors required by Section 456.013(7), F.S., will be allowed only during the biennium during which the diplomate is first awarded;
  • Presenting or moderating for the first time only a continuing psychological education program sponsored by a provider approved by the Board, except that credit will be limited to the number of credits allowed by the program;
  • Each hour of attendance at a Board meeting or Board committee meeting. Only one credit will be granted for each hour of full attendance and only ten (10) credits will be allowed each biennium regardless of how many hours are attended during the biennium. Attendance at a Board or committee meeting shall also satisfy, hour by hour, the requirement of professional ethics and legal issues credit set out in subsection (3) of this rule.
  • Continuing education courses approved by any Board within the Division of Medical Quality Assurance of the Department of Health, provided that such courses enhance the psychological skills and/or psychological knowledge of the licensee.
  • The provision of volunteer expert witness opinions for cases being reviewed pursuant to laws and standards relevant to the practice of psychology. Two hours of credit shall be awarded for each case reviewed up to a maximum of ten hours per biennium. In this regard, volunteer expert witnesses are expected to perform a review of the psychological, medical, legal, and/or ethical literature, as appropriate to the case being reviewed.

No continuing psychological education credit may be earned for:

  • Regular work activities as a psychologist;
  • Membership, office in, or participation on boards or committees of professional organizations;
  • Independent, unstructured or self-structured learning;
  • Personal psychotherapy or personal growth experience;
  • Authoring or editing books or articles;
  • Obtaining or providing supervision or consultation from or under a psychologist or other professional who is not a Board approved continuing psychological education provider;
  • Home study except from providers approved by the American Psychological Association or any of its affiliates.

The licensee shall maintain, and make available upon request, documentation to substantiate continuing psychological education credit required by the Board. The licensee shall retain such documentation for two (2) years following the renewal period during which the continuing psychological education credit was required.

Florida Speech Continuing Education & License Renewal

Florida-licensed Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists have an upcoming license renewal deadline on December 31, 2011.

Speech Pathologists or Audiologists must complete 30 hours (50 hours if dual licensed) of approved continuing education (CE) every 2 years for license renewal. The requirements are:

Speech Pathology or Audiology Assistants must complete 20 hours of approved CE within the biennium for which they are claimed. The requirements are:

Provisional Speech Pathologists or Audiologists are not required to obtain continuing education. However, approved CE taken while provisionally licensed may be used to satisfy the CE requirements for full licensure.

All Continuing Education must be Board or ASHA approved and earned within the biennium for which they are claimed.

Professional Development Resources is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology. As a condition of the biennial renewal of an active status license, the licensee shall attend and certify attending 30 credit hours, per biennium, of Board approved continuing education, twenty (20) of which shall be clinically related and two (2) of which shall be proof of completion of a course relating to prevention of medical errors. Those licensed as both audiologists and speech-language pathologists shall attend and certify attending 50 credit hours, per biennium, of Board approved continuing education, forty (40) hours of which shall be clinically related, twenty (20) in each specialty, of which two (2) hours shall be a Board approved course related to the prevention of medical errors.

The licensee or certificate holder shall maintain for a period of two years following renewal all documentation verifying the completion of the continuing education hours required for renewal. Upon request, such documentation shall be provided to the Board or Department.

The Board shall audit the files of randomly selected licensees and certificate holders to ensure compliance. Within 21 days of the receipt of such request from the Board or Department, the licensee or certificate holder shall provide evidence of completion of the required continuing education hours. Failure to maintain documentation of the required continuing education hours and submission of such upon request, or the submission of false or misleading information or documentation shall subject the licensee or certificate holder to disciplinary action.
