HIV/AIDS – New Online CE Course

HIV/AIDS: Therapy & Adherence is a new 3-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that reviews treatment and adherence issues in populations at high risk for HIV infection.

HIV/AIDS is a new 3-hour online CE course that reviews treatment and adherence issues in populations at high risk for HIV infection.

People who live with HIV can live almost normal lifespans and have little risk of transmitting the disease if they use antiretroviral therapy appropriately under medical care. However, only 57% of people infected with HIV follow their antiretroviral regimen well enough to achieve viral suppression.

In this course we review the HIV Care Continuum and antiretroviral therapy treatment. We then focus on specific groups of people (i.e., adolescents, illicit drug users, pregnant women) who can be infected with HIV, so that we may discuss common difficulties in adhering to treatment. We will also consider issues associated with transitioning patient care to multidisciplinary practices or community care.

The laws and legal issues that can hinder or support adherence to therapy are reviewed and discussed before examining evidence-based strategies for supporting patient adherence to medical treatment. Course #31-48 | 2023 | 54 pages | 21 posttest questions

Narcissism and NPD – New Online CE Course

Narcissism and NPD is a new 2-hour online continuing education (CE) course that distinguishes between the informal labeling of narcissistic behaviors and attitudes, and the applications of the DSM criteria for a formal clinical diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).

Narcissism and NPD is a new 2-hour online CE course that examines informal narcissistic behaviors and the DSM criteria for a clinical diagnosis of NPD.

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a psychological disorder characterized by persistent patterns of grandiosity, fantasies of unlimited power or importance, and the psychic need for admiration or special treatment. Core cognitive, affective, interpersonal, and behavioral features appear in a pervasive pattern of interpersonal difficulties, occupational problems, and significant psychosocial distress, such as impulsivity, volatility, attention-seeking, low self-esteem, and unstable relationships.

We will examine therapeutic approaches, such as the MOTHER technique, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, in light of the case studies presented. We will discuss how to cope with close relationships in which one partner frequently acts narcissistically or qualifies for a formal personality disorder diagnosis. Having to cope with the narcissistic behaviors shown by someone close can itself be psychologically distressing.

Suicidality and comorbidities in Narcissism and NPD will also be considered. Course #21-57 | 2023 | 38 pages | 15 posttest questions

Paraphilic Infantilism – New Online CE Course

Paraphilic Infantilism is a new 1-hour online CE course that describes three not widely known paraphilias: infantilism, diaperism, and erotic lactation.

Illustrative case histories of infantilism, diaperism, and erotic lactation are provided. The state of scientific knowledge and even the data on their incidences are quite limited. Further, many participants are simply not interested in changing or receiving any treatment because they have adjusted to a life of minimal social contacts or are enjoying stable relationships with consenting partners who hold similar interests. However, mention is made of the current preferred therapeutic choice for paraphilic disorders.

At the end of the course a brief discussion is offered on the wisdom of pathologizing unusual behaviors that are rewarding and legal, albeit very unconventional. Course #11-45 | 2022 | 17 pages | 10 posttest questions

Preventing Medical Errors & Improving Patient Safety is a new 2-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that meets the medical error renewal requirement for Florida licensees.

The perennial bad news about medical errors is that they continue to occur at relatively high levels. Retrospective studies have shown that 3–17% of patients in acute care hospitals experience one or more adverse events caused by hospital care, resulting in at least in a prolonged hospital stay. 400,000 people are affected by medical errors every year. But there is good news: a high proportion of errors are preventable.

Preventing Medical Errors addresses the impact of medical errors on today’s healthcare with a focus on root cause analysis, error reduction and prevention, and patient safety. It satisfies the requirements of the Florida State Legislature mandating a two-hour course relating to the prevention of medical errors as part of the licensure and renewal process for health professionals. Included are descriptions and examples of medical errors in various healthcare professions.

The course highlights the importance of critical thinking in assessment and planning and discusses health literacy, cultural competence, links between ethics and medical errors, the centrality of evidence-based practice, distinguishing science from pseudoscience, and improving communication skills. Also includes printable handouts with tips and strategies for error prevention, a glossary, and online resources. Course #21-47 | 2021 | 39 pages | 15 posttest questions

Mindfulness – New Online CE Course

Mindfulness: The Healing Power of Compassionate Presence is a new 6-hour online continuing education (CE) course that will give you the mindfulness skills necessary to work directly, effectively, and courageously with your own and your clients’ struggles.

Mindfulness: The Healing Power of Compassionate Presence is a new 6-hour online CE course that will bring the power of mindful presence to your practice.

Compassion towards others starts with compassion towards self. Practicing mindfulness cultivates our ability to pay intentional attention to our experience from moment to moment. Mindfulness teaches us to become patiently and spaciously aware of what is going on in our mind and body without judgment, reaction, and distraction, thus inviting into the clinical process, the inner strengths and resources that help achieve healing results not otherwise possible.

Bringing the power of mindful presence to your clinical practice produces considerable clinical impact in the treatment of anxiety, depression, PTSD, chronic pain, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, colitis/IBS, and migraines/tension headaches. As you will learn, the mindfulness practice has to be experienced, rather than talked about. This course will provide you with an excellent understanding of exactly what mindfulness is, why it works, and how to use it. You will also develop the tools that help you introduce mindful experiences in your practice, and how to deal with possible client resistance. Course #61-04 | 2021 | 90 pages | 35 posttest questions

provides clinicians with tools to help clients overcome the emotional effects from the psychological manipulation known as “gaslighting.”

Gaslighting is a new 1-hour online continuing education (CE) course that describes a very widespread phenomenon involving an abnormal pattern of behavior, known colloquially as “gaslighting.”

The characteristics and the consequences of this major disorder remain unfamiliar to most laypeople and even to most health care practitioners. Gaslighting has been insufficiently studied and is rarely mentioned in classrooms, abnormal psychology textbooks, or medical literature. Yet, individuals in intimate relationships, in the workplace, in social media, in politics, and even in governments have displayed the behaviors of gaslighting.

Awareness of gaslighting and its potentially devasting emotional effects will be helpful to health care professionals, who stand ready to assist in overcoming the extraordinary limitations it can have on clients and patients’ personal and social functioning.

This course will focus on individuals’ behaviors, the perpetrators and targets, and the typical consequences which appear in those targets. In addition, we will discuss the experts’ suggested strategies to cope with the perpetrators’ efforts. It is important for all of us to alert and inform citizens to be aware that gaslighting does indeed occur in the larger societal arenas as well.
