This CE test is based on the book "The Complete Guide to Special Education, 2nd Edition" (2010, 372 pages) and should appeal to a wide variety of professionals, including: clinical psychologists, school psychologists, social workers, professional counselors, speech-language pathologists, as well as educators and school administrators. The course explores the special education process, from testing and diagnosis to IEP meetings and advocating for children with special needs. The stages of identification, assessment, diagnosis, eligibility, and intervention are discussed step by step to help readers better understand the legal rights of children with special needs and the roles of the many professionals who make up the child’s educational team. This course provides clear and concise information about the special education process; addresses Response-to-Intervention (RTI), a new approach to identifying students with a learning disability. Special topics such as executive functioning, behavior management and discipline are discussed and supported with practical professional suggestions.

About the Author(s)

Linda Wilmshurst, PhD, ABPP received her BA and MA in Psychology from the University of Windsor and her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. Linda is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology (ABPP) and is a Registered Psychologist and School Psychologist in North Carolina. Linda is an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at Elon University, where she teaches courses in child and adult psychopathology, developmental psychology, psychology in the schools and introductory psychology; supervises student internships, and mentors undergraduate research, primarily in areas related to resiliency, self perceptions and well being in college students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Linda has authored a number of text books, including: Abnormal Child Psychology: A Developmental Perspective; Essentials of Child Psychopathology.


Alan Brue, PhD, NCSP has worked for many years as a school psychologist in Georgia, providing a wide range of services to metro-Atlanta school districts. A nationall certified school psychologists and university trainer, Brue has extensive knowledge of assessment, special education laws, and school organization.
