Course Abstract

Healing the Healer is a 1-hour online continuing education (CE) course that seeks to cultivate the emotional well-being of healthcare professionals who have been on the front lines supporting others.

As professionals in the business of supporting others, our vulnerability to burnout is inevitable. Add to that the fear, grief, fatigue, and trauma that resulted from the covid pandemic, and the risk of burnout suddenly increases dramatically. Self-care is no longer a hypothetical cliche that we can work into our lives as time allows. We must make intentional time to heal ourselves so that we can be effective mentally and emotionally for others.

This course will present the idea of a ‘Wounded Healer,’ consider the causes of wounds, and differentiate pandemic wounds from other types of occupation-related stress or burnout. It will then introduce a scientific framework for understanding how human flourishing can be nurtured, consisting of four pillars of well-being (awareness, connection, insight, and purpose).

Next, we will learn evidence-based, creative self-care strategies proven effective in healing the healer, aligning with the four pillars of well-being. These strategies will illustrate how each technique may be applied to your own life or to those you work with and support. Links to guided exercises are included whenever possible to provide further enrichment opportunities to explore these self-care techniques. Finally, an ending prompts you to create your own realistic, personalized self-care plan (worksheet included).
