Course Abstract
Ethics and Culture in Trauma-Informed Care is a 3-hour online video-based continuing education (CE) course that offers a comprehensive exploration of trauma-informed care within ethical practice.
This course provides an introduction to the core tenets of trauma-informed care (TIC), emphasizing integrating trauma awareness, cultural humility, professional ethics, and decision-making frameworks. Designed primarily for mental health professionals, it provides foundational knowledge, principles, and practical models to address complex ethical dilemmas arising in trauma work.
Trauma is ubiquitous, with far-reaching negative impacts on individuals and communities. Mental health providers need to be competent in bringing a trauma-informed ethical decision-making framework into their clinical practice, agencies, and systems, in order to actively counter the effects of trauma while promoting healing, resilience, and recovery.
Professional challenges like burnout, vicarious trauma, and boundaries will be examined through an ethical, trauma-informed lens, and practical strategies for how to mitigate such challenges will be addressed. In addition to didactic and reflective elements, the TIC principles and ethical codes of conduct will be brought to life through thought-provoking case scenarios – so participants can move from awareness to application to action. The presenter invites continued engagement, questions, and consultation opportunities to foster a community advancing trauma-informed ethical practice.
