Course Abstract

Medicare and Medicaid Fundamentals for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) is a 1-hour online video-based continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides an in-depth overview of Medicare and Medicaid programs as they relate to SLP services.

Medicare and Medicaid are two pivotal U.S. government health programs that significantly impact access to speech-language pathology (SLP) services and reimbursement for clinicians.

  • Medicare: A federal insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65+, younger people with disabilities, and those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
  • Medicaid: A joint federal and state program targeting low-income populations including children, pregnant women, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.

These programs are essential for ensuring access and reimbursement for speech and swallowing therapies across various settings such as hospitals, SNFs, home health agencies, schools, and rehabilitation centers.

Clinicians will learn the eligibility criteria, coverage differences, documentation requirements, provider reimbursement principles, and regulations associated with both programs. In addition, clinicians will gain an understanding of some of the new policies and regulations that may impact their ability to deliver SLP services.

This course equips SLPs with essential knowledge about Medicare and Medicaid’s structure, documentation, billing, and policy updates, enabling compliant and optimized clinical and reimbursement practices. The aim of this course is to help clinicians feel better prepared to deliver treatment services in compliance with federal and state regulations while supporting patient access to care.
