Texas SLP Continuing Education & License Renewal Information

Texas-licensed Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Audiologists have a biennial renewal deadline. 20 hours of continuing education (CE) are required to renew (30 hours if dual licensed), including 2 hours of ethics. All of the required hours may be earned through ASHA-approved online CEUs.

The continuing education requirements are intended to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to the public by licensed speech-language pathologists, audiologists, assistants in speech-language pathology, and assistants in audiology. Continuing education credits include courses beyond the basic preparation which are designed to promote and enrich knowledge, improve skills, and develop attitudes for the enhancement of the licensees, thus improving the speech and hearing care to the public.

The licensee is responsible for maintaining a record of his or her continuing education experiences. The certificates, diplomas, registries, or other documentation verifying earning of continuing education hours are not to be forwarded to the board at the time of renewal unless the licensee has been selected for audit by the board.

CE Broker precisely spells out each licensee’s requirements and tracks your progress as you complete continuing education hours.

When CE Broker reflects you’ve met your continuing education requirements, you will not receive an audit letter from the Ohio Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (Board). Compliance in CE Broker means you’ve already completed the electronic continuing education audit.

You can rely on CE Broker for your continuing education requirements and calculating progress towards those requirements. Subscribing and viewing your Transcript gives you access to the same data used by the Board.

Communication with EldersWith the increasing number of older people in the United States, it is vital for healthcare professionals to communicate effectively and respectfully with elders. Effective, appropriate communication with elders is important for many reasons. For speech-language pathologists and audiologists, communication is the foundation of service delivery. Communication is required for assessment of the person prior to treatment. Symptoms are, after all, subjective and must be reported by the person to the clinician. Effective communication also contributes to health literacy; the person’s understanding of her condition, treatment options, and the treatment plan to be followed. A person cannot comply with a treatment program unless the program is communicated clearly enough for the person to understand it. The more effective the communication, the more effective treatment will be – and the more cost effective. Communication also helps the clinician understand the whole person: the emotional, social, and financial realities that affect response to treatment and ability to comply. The SLP in Long-Term Care is a 2-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides an overview of speech-language pathology services in skilled nursing facilities.

The SLP in Long-Term CareAs the population of the United States ages, more healthcare professionals find themselves treating elders. Schools, private practice, and hospitals will always be major practice settings, but the demographics of our country point to a growing need for geriatric treatment. In 2014 there were an estimated 1.5 million people in 16,000 skilled nursing facilities. By 2030 this number may be as high as 2.6 million. There is a significant need now for treatment provided by speech-language pathologists in the skilled nursing facility setting which will only grow in the years to come.

Every practice setting has unique characteristics that affect clinical practice. Skilled nursing facilities have a multitude of regulations, complicated billing practices, and a culture of care that must be learned and integrated into the SLP’s treatment habits. This can make it difficult for the SLP working part-time or PRN in a skilled nursing facility.

The Speech-Language Pathologist in Long-Term Care will provide a framework for providing care in a skilled nursing facility. It is intended to give the SLP an overview of the important aspects of long-term care that affect treatment. The average resident and common treatment areas will also be discussed. Texas SLP License Renewal and Continuing Education Information

Texas-licensed Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Audiologists are required to renew their registrations on a two year cycle after January 1, 2006.

Texas SLPProof of having earned at least 20 clock hours of continuing education (CE) with at least two clock hours in ethics during the two-year renewal cycle is required by each licensee. The hours must have been completed prior to the date of expiration of the license. Dual licensees must complete 30 clock hours of CE with at least two clock hours in ethics during the two-year renewal cycle.

The continuing education requirements are intended to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to the public by licensed speech-language pathologists, audiologists, assistants in speech-language pathology, and assistants in audiology. This course is presented in two parts. Part 1 offers strategies for managing the everyday challenges of caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease, a difficult task that can quickly become overwhelming. Research has shown that caregivers themselves often are at increased risk for depression and illness. Each day brings new challenges as the caregiver copes with changing levels of ability and new patterns of behavior.
